How deep do you grind stumps?

Standard below-grade grinding removes the stump to 8-12 inches below the surface, sufficient for re-seeding or sod. If you are planning to plant a new tree or build over the location, let us know and we will grind deeper.

What happens to the wood chips?

We can leave chips on site — they make decent mulch and decompose naturally. If you want them hauled away, we offer chip removal as an add-on. We will discuss preference before we start.

Can you grind a stump close to a fence, house, or driveway?

Usually yes. Our equipment can work in tight spaces. We will assess access during the estimate and let you know if there are any limitations.

Do I need to call OUPS before stump grinding?

We handle the utility locate call (Ohio 811 / OUPS) as part of our process before any grinding work. You do not need to do anything on your end.

Will the roots re-sprout after grinding?

Some species are notorious for suckering from roots after the stump is removed — cottonwood, silver maple, tree of heaven, callery pear, and crabapple are the most common offenders in Central Ohio. Grinding removes the stump but cannot remove all lateral roots. If your species is prone to suckering, we will flag that during the estimate and discuss your options.

After a tree comes down, the stump remains. Stump grinding removes it below grade — quickly, cleanly, and without the disruption of full stump removal. We grind to 6 to 12 inches below grade depending on your goals, leaving the space ready to replant, sod over, or simply reclaim.

Why Grind the Stump?

Eliminates sprouting: Many tree species — including oaks, maples, and elms — send up root suckers from the stump after felling. Grinding below grade stops this.
Removes a tripping hazard: Stumps at grade or just below are a consistent lawn hazard and mowing obstacle.
Prevents pest habitat: Decaying stumps attract carpenter ants, termites, and wood-boring insects. Removing the stump removes the food source.
Allows replanting: Grinding deep enough clears the root ball sufficiently for new planting in or near the same location.
Improves appearance: A stump-free yard simply looks better and is easier to maintain.

What Stump Grinding Produces

Grinding produces wood chip mulch — typically enough to fill the void left by the stump. We can leave the chips on site as ground cover or mulch, or haul them away. The remaining void will settle over the following growing season as the root system decays naturally below grade.

Standalone or Add-On Service

Stump grinding is available as a standalone service on any existing stump, or as an add-on to any tree removal job. Adding stump grinding at the time of removal is almost always more cost-effective than scheduling it as a separate visit — the crew and equipment are already on site, and the stump is freshest immediately after felling.
