Most straightforward residential stump-grinding jobs in Columbus cost somewhere from the mid-$100s into the $400s. That is a useful ballpark, but it is not a price we can apply to every stump without seeing it.
Our current base stump-grinding item is $165. In the completed and invoiced Arborist Solutions records we reviewed, stump-specific charges ranged from $105 for a small serviceberry stump to $500 for a one-stump job, before applicable sales tax.
During the past 12 months, our quoted stump-removal line items averaged about $363 each. Some were less. Some were more. The stump, the access, the required depth, and the cleanup plan determine where the final price lands.
Real Stump-Grinding Prices From Our Records
Here is what our actual pricing shows:
- Current base stump-grinding item: $165

Those numbers are stump-related service charges, not entire tree-removal invoices. We separated the stump work from pruning, tree removal, bracing, and other services so the numbers would not be misleading.
Our system calls the service “Stump Removal,” but the work is normally stump grinding. We grind the stump below grade rather than excavating the entire stump and root system.
What Changes the Cost of Stump Grinding?
Stump diameter
A stump is measured across its widest point at ground level, including the root flare. That measurement can be much larger than the diameter of the tree trunk you remember.
A wide stump requires more grinding, more machine time, and more wear on the grinder teeth. Large surface roots can add more work as well.
We do not use a universal price-per-inch formula because diameter alone does not tell us enough about the job.
Equipment access
A stump in an open front yard is usually easier to handle than one behind a narrow gate, beside a fence, on a steep grade, or squeezed between a house and a property line.
We need enough clearance to get the grinder to the stump and operate it safely. Restricted access may require different equipment or more hand work.
Rock, concrete, metal, and buried material
The stump is only part of what we may encounter.
Central Ohio properties can contain construction fill, old fence material, landscape edging, concrete, rock, and other buried objects. Hitting those materials damages grinder teeth and can stop the job. We will grind as much as we can safely, and the price isn’t reduced if we encounter something that changes the original depth.
We inspect the area before grinding, but nobody can guarantee what is hidden underground.
Grinding depth
Our standard scope is to grind at least six inches below grade. Depending on the site and what you plan to do afterward, we may grind deeper.
Tell us if you plan to:
- Install grass or sod
- Build a patio or walkway
- Replant near the stump
- Install a fence
- Change the surrounding grade
The intended use affects how deep we need to grind and how much material must be removed.
The number of stumps
Multiple stumps completed during one visit may be more economical than scheduling separate trips. The grinder, truck, trailer, and crew are already on the property.
We still evaluate each stump individually because their sizes and access conditions may be different.
Cleanup and restoration
Stump grinding produces far more material than most people expect. The pile contains wood chips, soil, and pieces of root.
Our standard stump-grinding price does not automatically include complete debris removal, new topsoil, grass seed, or lawn restoration unless those items appear on the written proposal.
What Does Cleanup Cost?
Our current related service items include:
- Haul away enough chips to approximately level the area: starting at $125
- Remove grinding debris and excess soil, then backfill with topsoil: starting at $295
- Grind specified surface roots: starting at $225
These are current base add-on prices before applicable sales tax. Final pricing can change when the amount of material, site access, or restoration work is outside the normal scope.
Topsoil, seed, straw, sod, and final lawn restoration are not included unless they are specifically listed.
Can the Grindings Stay in the Hole?
Yes, but grindings are not the same as soil.
Leaving them may be fine when the goal is simply to remove a mowing obstacle or reclaim part of the yard. The material will settle as the remaining roots and wood decompose.
If you want healthy grass, a clean planting bed, or a stable finished grade, removing at least some of the grindings and replacing them with topsoil usually produces a better result.
We will explain the difference before the work begins so you can choose the cleanup level that makes sense for the property.
Does OHIO811 Need to Mark the Property?
Yes. Stump grinding disturbs the soil and can reach buried utilities.
Ohio requires the excavator to notify OHIO811 at least two working days before excavation, not including the day the notification is submitted. Arborist Solutions handles the public utility notification for our stump-grinding work.
Public utility marking does not locate privately installed systems such as:
- Irrigation lines
- Invisible dog fences
- Landscape lighting
- Private electric lines
- Drainage and downspout lines
- Privately installed gas or water lines
The property owner is responsible for identifying private utilities and concealed objects. You can read the current requirements directly from OHIO811.
Is It Cheaper to Grind the Stump During Tree Removal?
Usually.
Adding stump grinding to a scheduled tree removal avoids a separate mobilization of the grinder, truck, trailer, and crew. It also lets us plan the removal and grinding as one project.
Waiting does not make grinding impossible, but a separate visit may cost more than completing it while our equipment is already on the property.
Can We Price a Stump From a Picture?
Pictures help, but they rarely show the whole job.
A useful stump-grinding estimate also requires:
- The widest stump measurement at ground level
- The narrowest equipment access point
- Nearby fences, structures, and hardscaping
- The location of visible utilities
- The requested grinding depth
- Whether surface roots are included
- Whether grindings will stay or be hauled away
That is why Arborist Solutions normally evaluates the property before providing a final written proposal.
Can You Plant Another Tree in the Same Spot?
With enough prep work, sure.
Grinding removes the stump below grade. It does not remove every lateral root or the entire underground root system. Planting directly in the same location may require deeper grinding, additional material removal, and new soil.
In many cases, moving the new tree a short distance away gives it better soil and more room to establish. Tell us about the planting plan before we quote the grinding work so we can recommend the right depth and cleanup.
